AAP Mumbai mourns the loss of Shyama Kulkarni – Founder & trustee of AGNI, & an icon of social activism in Mumbai

Aug 22, 2021

The Aam Aadmi Party Mumbai mourns the loss of Shyama Kulkarni – one of the founding trustees of AGNI, who was considered as a godmother by many in the field of civic activism. As one of the most renowned social activists of Mumbai, the founding leader of innumerable social movements and citizen forums, Shyama Kulkarni has found a place in the hearts of countless Mumbaikars – whose woes she has helped resolve.

AAP Working President Ruben Mascarenhas had worked on several social projects under her guidance and leadership, along with many other activists – on an expansive array of causes, spanning from voter registration, pollution, water supply & sanitation, private encroachment of open spaces, to social leadership and civic grievance redressal. Her loss is even more heart-breaking for the AAP, as she had agreed to guide the Party in formulating and shaping their political campaign for the BMC Elections 2022, and advise us on the civic issues which plague Mumbai, due to the corruption and inefficiency of the BMC.

“Shyama Kulkarni was a person who strived to hold the government accountable for its failures and shortcomings. She was an icon for active citizenship, civic grievance redressal, and social activism. She was my godmother and mentor in politics, as well as social work; and I had the good fortune of knowing and working with her since the age of 16. Her work has inspired so many of us to strive for change, through activism and good governance.” said Ruben Mascarenhas, AAP Mumbai Working President.

“Shyama Kulkarni’s words of wisdom, her wealth of knowledge and her positivity – which inspired so many to take up social activism and work towards Mumbai’s civic improvement, will be immensely missed by all. As we carry her legacy forward, in our fight for Mumbai’s civic development and against the widespread corruption in the BMC, her indomitable spirit lives on with each one of us.” said Preeti Sharma Menon, AAP National Executive Member & Mumbai Prabhari.
